Independence Day is a good time to examine events that have made our lives better or worse in this day of age. The past eighteen months have been a challenge to all of us because of a pandemic, death of a black man at the hands of police, civil rights issues and a contested election that caused a terrorist attack on our democracy.
No matter what was said by some pundits and elected officials the Covid 19 pandemic is real. Instead of meeting the challenge head on our former president continually denounced its existence and it left 600,000 citizens dead. When he finally did something, he took credit for a vaccine that was in the making for years. The delivery system was there, scientists only had to find a formula to attack the virus.
Talking to many conservatives it seemed to them that the victim should have been on trial not the policeman who put a knee on his neck for over nine minutes. That led to riots and questions concerning how we treat people of color.
Our elected officials are divided down the middle as to the viability of an election that was tried in courts and proven to be correct. Some had denounced our former president for his role in an attempted coup and then kissed his ring or whatever to gain his favor. The decision of the Republican’s in the Senate to deny a bipartisan committee to get answers to the riot is shameful and should be remembered at the election polls. Unbelievable!
Thirteen states have passed laws making it more difficult for people to vote. A recent Supreme Court decision has supported Arizona’s new law concerning the viability of elections. Does this action make our highest court a political action committee instead of a government unit who interprets our Constitution?
New laws have to be passed to guarantee our right to vote in a free society. Under our present division this will never happen. We should all be ashamed that our lack of action will eventually be our downfall.
